If you’ve been using Owllo and have questions, this one’s for you.

We probably should lead with what Owllo does well — that’d make for a more exciting read. But cloud AI has been moving at an almost absurd pace lately, and we’d rather be straight with you: a locally-run AI on your own machine isn’t going to match that. Not yet. We’re closing the gap faster than you might expect (some of what we’re tuning internally honestly surprises even us), but a gap exists, and pretending otherwise wouldn’t be fair to you.

That said, even for a first release, we packed in features that are genuinely useful day-to-day. The short demo video below shows what Owllo can do right now: everyday conversation, file analysis, image generation, web search, and various automation tasks (with a lot more automation coming fast). Give it a watch.

The thing our team was most nervous about when we launched on April 6th was this: some of you would install it, poke around, compare it to Claude or ChatGPT, and feel let down. The deep analysis that ChatGPT handles without blinking, the long document summaries Gemini knocks out cleanly — if that’s the bar you’re measuring against, current Owllo is going to feel short. We get it.

But we’ll say it plainly: don’t give up on it.

Why Now?

We could have kept the doors closed until everything was perfect. We chose not to, and here’s why.

First, we want to build this with you. Real user feedback is irreplaceable. Where does Owllo answer well? Where does it fall apart? What tasks do people actually want to run? What features are genuinely missing? No amount of internal testing gets us that information. Your feedback tells us what to fix first.

Second, we wanted to use the beta period to get stability right. A lot of skills we’ve already built internally didn’t ship with this first release — things like reading and organizing your local files and folders, multi-AI communication features, and more. The team felt strongly that anything touching your files needed to be rock solid before it went out. A convenience tool that misbehaves is worse than no tool at all. So we’re rolling those out carefully, one at a time.

Beta runs through April, and we’re planning to push updates nearly every day. More features, more custom AI options, more of what makes running your own local AI worth it in the first place.

Why lightweight models matter

Bigger models are smarter. That’s just true. But bigger models require massive server infrastructure, which means your data leaves your hands the moment you use them. And when those services raise prices or change their terms, you don’t have much choice but to go along with it.

Lightweight models change that equation. Your data stays on your machine. There’s no bill. You’re not locked into anyone else’s policies. And most importantly, you can keep shaping it into something that’s specifically yours. That’s the bet we’re making, and we believe in it.

We could have shipped more features out of the gate and made a bigger splash. We decided to be careful instead. Every update makes Owllo a little better than it was the day before. It doesn’t have to be perfect to be worth starting — and you can only get to perfect by starting.

We’d really appreciate your feedback throughout the April beta. Every bit of it helps.

Hey, Team Owllo here.
