Where and How Do You Install It?

Hey, Team Owllo here.

“Don’t you need a really expensive computer to run local AI?” Short answer: if your machine can handle a modern 3D game without choking, you’re probably good to go.

Minimum specs

Owllo is built around lightweight AI models, so you don’t need a beefy GPU to get started. The minimum is 8GB of RAM and 10GB of free storage. On Mac, any Apple Silicon device — the M Series — will work smoothly. On Windows, it’ll run on CPU alone, though having a GPU makes response times significantly faster. At launch we support macOS and Windows, with Linux support coming in May.

If you want to run larger models or do heavier tasks like image generation, you’ll want beefier hardware — Owllet, our AI library, lists recommended specs for those cases. But for everyday use: chatting, organizing documents, web search, task automation — the default model that installs with Owllo handles all of it without breaking a sweat. A laptop you bought three years ago will most likely do just fine.

Getting it running

The install process is almost shockingly simple. Three steps, and we put together a video walkthrough below if you want to follow along.

Go to the Owllo site and download the installer for your OS. Double-click it and install, same as any other app. Once it launches, give your AI a name on the onboarding screen and start talking. That’s it. No terminal, no environment variables, no manually downloading models. Owllo handles all of that in the background.

You can also use Owllo away from your desk. As long as your PC is on, you can connect to your Owllo remotely through any web browser — including from your phone. Telegram integration is supported too. We’ll keep posting guides on all of this on the blog.

Where things are headed

Owllo is improving every day, but we’re still just getting started.

On the model side, Team Owllo is continuously training and fine-tuning lightweight models that we push out as updates. The launch version runs primarily on a Gemma 4-based model, but you’ll be able to upgrade to our own tuned models before long. The same Owllo, noticeably smarter over time. The model library will keep expanding too, with specialized models for different use cases alongside our own trained and tuned releases.

Skills will keep growing as well. Official skills get added automatically with app updates, and community-built custom skills are one click away. Messenger integrations are expanding beyond Telegram — WhatsApp and Discord are on the roadmap.

And the feature we’re most excited about: Owllo Teacher. No AI expertise needed. Upload your own data, set the direction you want, and train a model that actually sounds like you — your vocabulary, your knowledge, your style. Share it with family or friends if you want.

Owllo isn’t the kind of app you install once and forget about. It’s a platform that gets better the more you use it, and better with every update. Give it a shot.
